WHY I PAINT
by PAT QUINN on 10/10/2007 5:26:41 AM

It's a beautiful early fall day here in Pittsburgh as I write this. We have had a long stretch of 80 degree summer like weather so the turning of the leaves has barely begun. This will push my annual fall foliage hike back a bit but thats fine, from what I've been told this leads to better color when they do. Thinking about this got me to start thinking about what kind of paintings will come out of this years photos and how I'll change this, combine that with that, or whatever to make the painting better. It was then that I realized that I had my blog post today, why I paint.

When I was a child taking oil painting classes, long before my own framed oil paintings, I would marvel at how you could work paint in a way that resembled realism. I would ask my teacher how the artist created that effect without using what I would call then "the right color". Thats when I learned that the value of colors, not the colors themselves are more important. It was only a few weeks later when I got the point and decided to try my own original paintings. My teacher supported me the entire way and the rest as you would say is history. I haven't had a chance to see her since she retired 3 years ago, but I know she would be really proud to see that I have my own business offering my original framed oil paintings to the world.

I guess you could say that I paint to see how "real" I can paint my "fantasy world" as one of my artist friends have said in the past. I love being the creator and depicting miles of land with my brush and having viewers say it looks "3-D". Yes I guess it goes back to my early days where I found the beauty of creating a three dimensional image on a two dimensional surface while using the "wrong" colors to boot. Thats magic to me, and thats why I paint.

Thats all for today so as always, feel free to share your thoughts by leaving a post and I'll see you on Friday.
